What does LivZero do?

We help design tailored, equitable community engagement and governance processes, as well as gather and analyze quantitative and qualitative data for environmental justice and climate-related program and policy development.

Who does LivZero work with?

We work with community-based nonprofits (local and national), institutions, such as colleges and universities, and municipalities focused on developing public policy, climate plans, and other research projects, and creating place-based, community-driven solutions that help mitigate the climate crisis.

Why should I include community engagement strategies in my climate work?

We all want to have agency. Engaging communities to develop place-based solutions that genuinely reflect their long-term visions of achieving self-determination, while also protecting the climate, is the epitome of democracy. In addition, it is the most upstream approach on can take to developing long-term solutions that sustain… because the environment now has stewards to protect Her.

What is the difference between frontline & historically marginalized communities?

Frontline communities include people who have been impacted by environmental racism and are fighting to combat extractive practices that accelerate climate change and directly impact their neighborhoods. Specifically, Indigenous communities are frontline communities who continue to fight for the rights and stewardship of their native lands that continue to be disrupted, devastated, and displaced. Historically marginalized communities include people, mostly non-white dominant, who have been impacted by racism, sexism, classism, and other prejudice preventing them from having governance over their own rights, preventing them from exercising their autonomy, and preventing them from receiving investments they need.

Who is included when you say 'historically marginalized communities'?

Historically marginalized communities include all groups - whether based on religious, ethnic, cultural, racial, sexual, age or other identities - who have been historically and systemically oppressed from the processes of developing policies that directly affect their everyday lives, such as (but not limited to): people who identify as Indigenous, Black, Latine/Hispanic, womxn, people practicing Judaism and Islam, people that identify with LGBTQIA+, people experiencing homelessness, incarcerated and returning citizens, people with disabilities, senior citizens, refugees and immigrants without U.S. citizenship, and many more.

How long do LivZero's contracts run?

It depends on the project. However, we do not accept any contracts shorter than 6 months. We prefer contracts that run anywhere between 8-24 months so that we can do our work deliberately.
